The Sabarmati Report Movie Review

Sabarmati Report Review: Vikrant Massey and Others' Solid Performances Help Keep This Intriguing Film on Track Despite Mid-Section Detours.

It seems this Friday is all about cinematic explorations of events that changed the course of Indian history. Nikkhil Advani's series Freedom at Midnight and Dharmendra Sharma's The Sabarmati Report.

Vikrant Massey, after the brilliant 12th Fail, is back to zero, as he mentioned in it. This film is based on the horrific Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002, where dozens of people were burnt alive.

The interesting thing about the plot here is that it starts from the POV of a local reporter, Samar Kumar (Massey), who is attached to a news channel’s entertainment beat. He is asked to take over camera duties for the channel’s star ‘English reporter’, the stern Manika Rajpurohit (Radhika Apte). The difference in treatment of journalists from the two languages is an important theme.

They cover the Godhra train incident on the ground and discover it wasn’t an accident. But Samar is shocked when Manika’s reporting claims otherwise. He presents his news channel with a tape with the victims’ testimonies, but they refuse to air it, claiming it’s their property. He quits journalism, and what happens next is the rest of the plot.

The first half of the film is well-paced, maintaining a back-and-forth interest between Manika and Samar. The conflict feels genuine and believable. Vikrant finds his space—stories where the system tries to suppress his character, but he emerges victorious in the end. In the process, he undergoes a metamorphosis and gets at least one monologue in the screenplay. And we’re not complaining about his template anymore because it’s effective. Radhika has a good screen presence and doesn’t go overboard with the haughtiness she needs to emote.

The second half of the screenplay, written by Ovinash Singh Tomar and Arjun Bhandegaonkar, is where things get messy. The story of truth-seeking is repeated with Rishi Khanna’s character Amrita Gul and Samar’s investigation. After a point, you stop caring. The film picks itself up in the final scene where Massey breaks the fourth wall and gives an identity to the 59 people who lost their lives in the Godhra incident.

The Sabarmati Report consciously stays away from using too many ‘Hindu’ and ‘Muslim’ tags. Although there is an attempt at some subtle messaging in the film. A scene sample where a ‘mysterious character’ meeting the news channel team is given a hero’s entry. It takes away from the seriousness of the subject. There is also a desire from the makers to have some light banter between Samar and Amrita in places—which again, doesn’t fit. The background score by KSO Audio Works isn’t right.

Verdict: Overall, The Sabarmati Report is an interesting take on something that shook India, the effects of which can still be felt today. It goes off the road somewhere in the middle, making us question its intentions a couple of times, but finds its way back on track by the climax. Decent performances help.

Amazing Race Ryan Ferguson

Amazing Race Ryan Ferguson

Ryan Ferguson, the Amazing Race Season 33 Finalist, Set to Receive $38 Million for Nearly Two Decades of Wrongful Conviction.

If you’ve never met Ryan Ferguson, his Instagram bio says it all: “10 years of life wasted, shaping every day of it.”

Ferguson, who was wrongfully convicted of murder and released in 2013, has made it a point to live every day to the fullest.

“I... know, almost for certain, that if you hadn’t had the trial, a lot of the facts would probably still be hidden,” he told Erin Moriarty in a 2013 interview.

Moriarty, who has covered his story from the beginning, caught up with Ferguson to talk about his latest adventure: competing on “The Amazing Race.”

Ferguson recalls when he was contacted by a casting director on Instagram.

“I thought it was a joke. I was like, ‘I’m really not going to make it on that race, okay,’” he told Moriarty on a Zoom call. “I Googled it, and it was actually real, and I was just like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ll check it out and talk to them.’”

The 33rd season of the show, which returned after a long hiatus, had first started filming in 2020 but then the coronavirus pandemic shut down production.

“I thought, ‘Okay, this is going to be over in a month.’ Little did we know, a month later, two months later, the whole world was shut down,” he said. “We were surprised that it was paused for 19 months.”

When he returned to filming, he told host and producer Phil Keoghan, “I’m used to being shut down. I just went straight to jail life.”

In addition to working a lot of jobs, he went to school and got his pilot’s license. Ferguson told Moriarty that he couldn’t just sit around being upset about being shut down — especially when the rest of the world was also shut down.

“I had to take advantage of the opportunity to do something positive with my life,” he said. “And going back to the race helped.”

Ferguson says racing with his dad was “the best thing ever.”

“I figured it would be me and my dad and we’d do a lot of these trips together,” he said. “You know, he’s a little bit older and can’t really keep up.”

On the show, Ferguson is joined by his best friend, Dusty Harris, and he says it’s been an amazing race around the world with Harris. Of course, it’s a competition, which he admits can get less than ideal.

“I’m just like, ‘Okay, I’ve been through a lot of these stressful environments before, and I know how to help my fellow teammate,’” he told Moriarty. “And so, all of those things just kind of came naturally to me.”

He says the biggest takeaway from doing “The Amazing Race” is being persistent — and growing.

“Dusty and I, we went through some tough times,” he said. “We messed up a lot… but the thing is, we never got mad at each other.”

“That’s what life is about, and you’ve got to keep going — no matter what.”

Not forgetting his experiences with the criminal justice system, Ferguson has remained active in the discussion — appearing in MTV’s 2016 documentary “Unlocking the Truth,” which highlighted other possible wrongful convictions.

He also recently started a new podcast called “Jail Count,” aimed at taking a look at the American justice system, including interviews with former inmates.

“I wanted to create this opportunity for them — a platform where they could speak, they could talk about their truths, and humanize them. Because people need to see that a lot of these individuals are coming back into the real world, and they need our help.”

Pakistani Movie Main Hoon Shahid Afridi Comments Review

Shahid Afridi's Candid Comments on a Film Titled After Him

In a recent appearance on Waasay Chaudhry's live audience talk show, "Gup Shap," renowned cricketer and former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi shared his thoughts on various topics, including a Pakistani film titled "Shahid Afridi Hoon."

During the 34-minute episode, the cricketer discussed a fictional film based on him, not a biopic as one might assume. The discussion arose when Afridi admitted his fondness for Punjabi dramas, crediting his teammate Abdul Razzaq for introducing him to the genre. The host then asked him about the types of films he enjoys and casually confessed to writing the screenplay for "Shahid Afridi Hoon."

"Oh, you wrote that film? It should have been titled 'Main Hoon Humayun Saeed'," Afridi joked in response to Waasay's confession, eliciting laughter from the audience.

"Humayun came to me and said, 'Lala, we're making this film,' and I gave him permission to use my name. You must have seen the film 'Mujhe Khuda Pe Yaqin Hai.' Through that film, people were given many wonderful messages, so I told him, 'If this film is like that, then why not? I'll even appear in the film myself.' But the condition was that people should get good messages from the film," Afridi further explained, elaborating on his thought process behind letting Humayun use his name for the film's title, which was bound to attract a large audience.

"When I finally watched the film, I told Humayun, 'You gave the film the wrong title.' He asked me why, and I said, 'The film should have been called 'Main Hoon Humayun Saeed' because you're in the film everywhere. I didn't see any good message in the film," Afridi joked.

In the same segment of the show, Afridi revealed his desire for a biopic based on his life, chronicling his remarkable journey to becoming a cricket sensation: "I wish a film could be made on my life. The experiences I've been through."

Haris Rauf Saap Kamran Ghulam

Pakistan batsman Kamran Ghulam made a splendid debut, scoring a magnificent century against England on the first day of the second Test in Multan.

The 29-year-old scored 118 runs off 224 balls, including 11 fours and a six, taking Pakistan to a solid 259-5 at stumps. Ghulam's outstanding performance came when Pakistan was facing early trouble, losing two wickets for just 19 runs.

Replacing the out-of-form Babar Azam, Ghulam forged a crucial 149-run partnership for the third wicket with Saud Shakeel (77). He also shared a 65-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan (37*), helping Pakistan recover and end the day in a strong position. Ghulam completed his century in 280 minutes, becoming the 12th Pakistani batsman to score a century on Test debut, with a boundary off Root.

This success comes after a long wait for a national team spot following his record-breaking performance in the 2020 domestic season, where he scored 1,249 runs.

However, as Ghulam's name trended on social media, an old controversial video from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) resurfaced. In 2022, fast bowler Haris Rauf slapped Ghulam on the field after dropping a catch during a Lahore Qalandars match. Although the incident drew attention, both players quickly reconciled, with Rauf hugging Ghulam after the match.

Despite this past controversy, Ghulam's Test debut has now overshadowed that incident. His century has grabbed headlines and given Pakistan a fighting chance against England. His innings eventually ended when he was bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi just half an hour before the close of play.

Babar Azam Chat Leaked

Outrage Over Leaked WhatsApp Chats Between Babar Azam and PCB Official

Netizens and former cricketers have expressed their outrage over the alleged leak of "private" WhatsApp chats between Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam, and a senior official of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The act has been condemned as a violation of privacy and an unethical move.

The controversy gained momentum after former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif's comments suggesting that the PCB's senior management was ignoring Babar Azam's messages.

Speaking on state-run broadcaster PTV Sports, Rashid Latif claimed that the captain had been messaging the PCB Management Committee chairman, Zaka Ashraf, Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, and Director International Cricket Usman Wahla for the past two days, but none of the three had responded.

What Happened During the Live TV Show?

The controversy further escalated when a screenshot of the alleged WhatsApp chat between the two was aired on a private news channel.

When asked about the rumors circulating on TV and social media regarding him calling the chairman and not getting a response, Babar Azam allegedly replied, "Salam Salman bhai, main ney sir ko koi call nahi ki" (Salam Salman bhai, I haven't called the sir).

However, there was no mention of when this conversation took place.

Former Pakistan cricketer, Azhar Ali, who was a guest on the show, questioned the reporter if he had taken Babar's consent before leaking the private conversation.

To which he replied that as a reporter, he didn't need to ask.

This action did not sit well with netizens who slammed the TV channel management and the reporter for their "unethical" act.

"I think you all forgot that the WC tournament is still on... and he is still the captain of Pakistan. When will we grow up," tweeted Aneela Khawaja, a Pakistani journalist based in the UK.

Anchor Apologizes

Meanwhile, the show's anchor, Wasim Badami, has apologized on behalf of his team and the TV management for the incident and explained his side of the story.

He admitted that it was a mistake to air the screenshot without Babar Azam's consent and that he regrets it. He also revealed that the decision to air the screenshot was made at the last moment based on a video clip of the PCB head allegedly giving permission to do so.

However, the anchor acknowledged that it was a hasty decision and apologized for any inconvenience caused.

It is important to note that the alleged permission from the PCB head was irrelevant in this case as it involved two private individuals and Zaka Ashraf was not one of them. A formal statement from the PCB could clarify the matter.

Billy Zane Marlon Brando Biopic

Billy Zane Marlon Brando Biopic

Film fans have been stunned by an actor's incredible transformation into Marlon Brando for a new biopic.

Many actors have undergone unrecognizable transformations for roles, with Colin Farrell being the most recent actor to do so for his role in the HBO series The Penguin.

But perhaps the most impressive transformation in recent years is poised to take the crown.

An actor has become Brando for a new film titled Waltzing with Brando, which focuses on the actor between 1966 and 1974, when he was working on The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris in Paris.

Waltzing with Brando will feature the actor in the role of Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 gangster film, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar, and film fans were stunned when a still was released online.

It wasn't a picture of Brando from The Godfather, but of actor Billy Zane playing Brando in The Godfather.

Zane's casting, whose credits include Dead Calm and Titanic, stunned Brando fans, who agree that the actor looks exactly like him in the picture.

"You could tell me that was a picture of Marlon Brando and I would believe it," responded one stunned social media user when the image was released online, with many others agreeing that they would have mistaken the picture for Brando when they first saw it.

"No way that's Billy Zane. I can't even recognize him," wrote another, concluding, "This might be the greatest casting ever..."

Waltzing with Brando, written and directed by Bill Fishman, is described as "the little-known but entirely true story of how Marlon Brando convinced architect Bernard 'Bernie' Judge that, together, they could create the world's first, ultimate eco-retreat on a small, uninhabited island in Tahiti."

The synopsis continues: "Brando believed this grand environmental experiment would inspire the world to a better, more sustainable future," the synopsis continues. "Thus, Bernie, the practical problem-solver, and Brando, the temperamental dreamer, embark on an incredible adventure and, along the way, become unlikely friends. But will the dream ever be realized?"

There is currently no release date for the film.

Brando, whose other films included A Streetcar Named Desire, Guys & Dolls and On the Waterfront, died in 2004 at the age of 80.
